How to track your application
Track your UK passport application using the GOV.UK online tracking service: https://www.gov.uk/track-passport-application
You need two things to check the status: your application reference number and your date of birth. The reference number is on the email confirmation you received when you submitted your application. If you applied by post, it was on the acknowledgement letter.
The tracker updates periodically rather than in real time. Checking several times a day will not speed anything up.
What each status message means
The tracker shows a sequence of status messages as your application moves through the process. GOV.UK does not explain what they mean. Here is what is actually happening at each stage:
Application received / In progress Your application has arrived at HM Passport Office and is in the queue to be processed. This is the first status you will see after submitting online or after HMPO acknowledges a postal application.
Documents received If you sent physical supporting documents (for example, for a first passport application or a name change), this status confirms they have arrived. If you are renewing online without sending documents, you may not see this message.
Application approved Your application has passed the review stage. Your identity and entitlement to a British passport have been confirmed. The passport is now being prepared for printing.
Passport printed Your passport has been printed and is in the despatch queue.
Passport despatched Your passport has been sent by secure delivery. HM Passport Office uses a tracked courier service (typically Royal Mail Tracked 24 — verify the current delivery partner at GOV.UK). Allow 1 to 2 working days for delivery after this status appears.
Passport delivered The tracking service has marked your passport as delivered to your address.
'Despatched' does not mean 'delivered' — allow 1 to 2 working days
Many people contact HM Passport Office as soon as they see "Despatched," expecting same-day or next-day arrival. The despatch status means it has left HMPO, not that it has arrived at your door. Royal Mail Tracked 24 aims for next working day but is not guaranteed. Wait at least two working days before making contact.
How long does processing take?
Standard processing times for online applications are published by HM Passport Office and are updated when volumes or staffing change. Do not rely on a figure in any guide — verify the current stated processing time directly at GOV.UK when you apply: https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport/renew
The 10-week period you may have heard quoted is the upper bound for standard applications, not the typical time. Most applications process significantly faster. Postal applications tend to take longer than online ones.
Processing times vary by season. The period from April to August is typically the busiest, and times can lengthen considerably. Applications submitted in January or February are usually processed more quickly.
What to do if it is taking longer than stated
If your application has exceeded the stated processing time currently shown on GOV.UK, contact HM Passport Office. Use the online query form or call the Passport Advice Line — find current contact details at: https://www.gov.uk/passport-advice-line
One important thing: do not cancel your application and reapply. Cancelling removes you from the queue entirely and you restart from the beginning. Contact HMPO about the delay first.
If you have a trip coming up
If your travel date is approaching and your standard application is not yet resolved, there are two options through HM Passport Office.
Fast Track: a one-week service available by appointment at a passport office. You must already have a submitted application or apply fresh at the appointment. An additional fee applies on top of the standard passport fee — verify the current amount at GOV.UK.
Premium appointment: a same-day service at a passport office. You receive your passport before you leave the building. Slots are limited and book out quickly, especially in peak season. If you need a Premium appointment, book it as early as possible rather than waiting until a few days before travel.
Both services require you to attend a passport office in person. Find your nearest location at GOV.UK.
Contacting your MP as a last resort
Most people do not know that MPs' offices can intervene in urgent passport cases. If your travel date is imminent, standard processing has exceeded its stated time, and you have not been able to resolve it through HMPO directly, contacting your MP's constituency office is worth trying.
MPs' caseworkers deal with constituent passport delays regularly and have a direct route to raise cases with HM Passport Office. This is a last resort, not a first step — exhaust the normal contact routes first.

Common questions about tracking a passport application
How do I track my UK passport application?▾
Go to gov.uk/track-passport-application. You need your application reference number (from your confirmation email or acknowledgement letter) and your date of birth. The tracker shows the current status of your application.
What does 'Application approved' mean on the tracker?▾
It means your identity and entitlement to a British passport have been confirmed. Your application has passed the review stage and is now being prepared for printing. You are close to the end of the process at this point.
How long does it take for a passport to arrive after being despatched?▾
Allow 1 to 2 working days after the "Despatched" status appears. HM Passport Office uses a tracked courier service for delivery. If it has not arrived after 3 working days, contact the passport advice line with your tracking reference.
My passport is taking longer than the stated time — what should I do?▾
Contact HM Passport Office via the online query form or phone. Current contact details are at gov.uk/passport-advice-line. Do not cancel and reapply — cancelling removes you from the queue entirely and forces you to start again.
Can I speed up my application if I have a holiday booked?▾
If your travel date is approaching, you can book a Fast Track appointment (approximately 1-week service) or a Premium appointment (same day) at a passport office. Both cost more than the standard application. Book as early as possible — Premium slots in particular book out quickly in spring and summer.
What if I need to travel urgently and my passport hasn't arrived?▾
Book a Premium appointment at your nearest passport office. You will receive your passport on the same day. Verify current availability and book via GOV.UK. If you cannot get a slot quickly enough, contact your MP's constituency office — they can raise urgent cases directly with HM Passport Office.
Will contacting the Passport Office speed up my application?▾
Not in most cases, if your application is within the stated processing time. HMPO cannot prioritise individual applications simply because someone has called. Contact is worthwhile once your application has exceeded the stated time, or if your travel date is close and you need to explore Fast Track or Premium options.
